Laser hair removal is a technique in which a light of specific wavelength is delivered into the skin. It is directed towards the base of the hair called hair shaft. Hair shaft contains a substance called melanin which absorbs this laser energy. It is hence destroyed and is not capable of growing hair again. The surrounding skin is lighter in color and hence does not absorb this light. It is a means of thermally or mechanically damaging the hair follicle.

Who are the suitable candidates- As laser is absorbed by the darker material, people with dark hair and fair skin are the most suitable candidates. New lasers that are being used now suit a wider spectrum of people.

How many sessions are required- Depending upon the area being treated, type of hair and skin tone, the number of sessions may vary. Larger areas require more time and more number of sessions as compared to smaller areas.

Some of the hair may be resistant to this treatment. They might grow back after the treatment is over.

Hyper pigmentation- This is a temporary condition which results in change in the color of the skin

Preparation

Talk to your practitioner about any medical condition if you have.

Your practitioner should be able to tell you about the results you can expect at the end of session. Talk to you practitioner about the risks involved.

It’s a good idea to see the photographs of before and after the treatment. It will help you see the effectiveness of the treatment.

Before you start the treatment, stay out of sun and wear sun block whenever you go out.

If you have long hair, they will burn when they will come in contact with laser. It is hence important to shave prior to starting the treatment.

You must avoid deodorants or moisturizers for a day or two before and after the treatment as the skin is highly sensitive.

It is important to wear the protective eye wear by the client as well as the technician. When technician lifts the laser device, a little light will escape and there could be some exposure to the eyes.

What to expect?

A small hand held device is pressed against the area to be treated. A gel is applied on the tip of the device to protect the skin. When the device is activated, a single wavelength light passes through the surface of the skin into the hair follicles. This is the place where hair growth originates. The heat is enough to damage the hair follicle and inhibit the further hair growth.

How long the treatment lasts?

It mainly depends on the area being treated. But laser hair removal is comparatively a faster procedure. Legs take the longest time.

Laser Hair Removal Treatments

It varies from individual to individual. Each person has a different hair growth cycle. It may take 3-4 treatment every 4-6 weeks to get the desired results. Laser must treat all the three stages of hair growth.

Laser hair removal is considered safe and has been proved to give satisfactory results. It is a very important and significant decision. You must consider all the possibilities before you decide that this procedure is the one you want to go for. Most important thing is to have realistic expectations and be prepared if the end result do not meet your expectations. Talk to your physician prior to your treatment about you expectations from the procedure. Your money and health are important, so make an informed decision.
