Why Hair Extensions?

Many people are of the view that hair extensions are an excellent way of lengthening & thickening your hair. Hair extensions don’t last forever, there could be many reasons for this, but mostly, it’s because of the continuous growth of one’s hair. Anyone who wishes to have a drastic change in their looks can opt for such extensions giving the hair on the head a complete make-over.

What are Hair Extensions?

There is an option of synthetics or actual human hair in these extensions, while the latter one is expensive; synthetic is a good choice when it comes to the feel & style & the overall look. There are different types of hair extensions. They differ in terms of technique, application and the type of hair it is used for. Diverse material is used in some hair extensions. Some systems of hair extensions can last longer than others. Extensions attached to the hair get loose as our hair continues to grow and will have to be removed or retightened.

Different Types of Hair Extensions

There are three key categories: Strand by strand extensions, weft extensions, and clip-on extensions.

a)    Strand by strand extensions: These extensions are connected to the hair near the roots in small parts using polymer bonds. These bonds are then soften. After that, these bonds are folded to make it small, flat & smooth. Such extensions may have longevity of 3-4 months depending on the hair growth. To remove it, a gel containing alcohol is applied to the bond to dry it out.  When pinched, it breaks and slides out of the strand.

b)    Weft Extensions: Small parts of the hair are braided closely near the scalp. These braids support the curtain of false hair to which it is sewn. This sort of extensions should be avoided on fine hair as the braids remove the natural thickness of the hair making the extensions visible.

c)    Clip-on extensions: These types of extensions do not harm the hair, but still make it look real & gorgeous. Comparatively, they are cheaper too. They are also called as temporary extensions. The strands of hair which are attached individually with the support of a clip. These can be removed when not in use.

Advantages

Hair extensions which are performed by licensed salon professionals not only extend the length of the hair, but also add volume to it. Now they can transform the shade of your hair using chemical-free color & allow people to state themselves with new highlights, texture etc. ,thereby, creating an instant make-over. Some of the brands use 100% human hair extensions, which have 100% keratin protein which can last from 3-6 months.

Disadvantages

It may be a good option for a temporary period, but, extensions do add oodles of stress on the hair follicles. High quality extensions are an expensive affair & if one has to do it every 3 months it becomes even more luxurious. Since the hair is applied directly to one’s hair, chances are that, it might pull the hair, boosting bald patches or maybe hair loss. Some of the glue used in hair extensions can be damaging to our skin or hair.

Care & tips while handling hair extensions

Hair should be kept clean because dirt build-up elevates tangles. Brushing regularly prevents tangles. Wetting & brushing the hair gently before washing it is also a good option. Also, while brushing, it is a good habit to start from the ends and go upwards. Artificial heating of the hair should be minimized & the hair should be left to dry naturally. While swimming, it is recommended to wear a cap, since chlorine & salt water can be the factor which can tangle & roughen the hair. Especially while using the metal clip-on extensions, one must remember that if is worn continuously & not removed temporarily, scars might occur or maybe even permanent hair loss. Last but not the least, hair extensions should be done only by licensed & certified professionals. Because attaching & removing these extensions need skillful & special training.
