A unibrow (single line of eyebrow which is joined over nose) or an eyebrow that is thicker than the normal are generally matters of concern for most women. But women should worry no more as the cosmetic experts have come up with the idea of eyebrow waxing.

Preparing the Eyebrow

Before waxing, brush the eyebrow into place with a baby toothbrush or use a clean mascara wand, so that their natural shape is neatly defined. Apply an astringent such as witch hazel to anesthetize the sensitive skin under the brow. Follow these simple steps to prepare the eyebrow:

1.   Hold a ruler parallel to your nose and level with the inner corner of the eye. This will help you in identifying the point where the brow should begin. If your eyes are close together, make the gap between the brows wider. If your eyes are far apart, don’t wax the start line of the brow too much so that they are closer together. Mark the correct point with a dot.

2.    Next, work out where the highest point of the curve/ arch should be by holding a ruler from the edge of the nostril past the outer edge of the iris (the colored part of the eye) and up to the eyebrow. Mark the spot with a dot.

3.    Now link up the dots in a gentle arch to draw on the ideal shape of the eyebrow that you want to achieve. This will give you a guideline to go by when applying the wax. You should aim for a smooth arched brow that tapers slightly at the outer ends.

Applying the Wax

It is recommended that you use a  professional waxing kit - basically a jar or tub of wax which can be warmed up in boiling water and applied with a small applicator or spatula, and (usually muslin) removal strips. The products vary, so it is important to go through the directions carefully.

Warm up the wax to optimum temperature and use the small spatula to apply a thin layer of wax to the growth. Take a small amount of wax on the spatula to avoid the wax dripping when it is applied. Apply wax with the hair growth under the eyebrow (i.e. in the same direction that the hair grows in) and you should not let the wax dry.

Removing the Hair

The eyebrow should not be waxed from above but from below. Waxing from under the brow will widen your eyes and help to get the line even. This will also give you a younger and glamorous look. As soon as it is applied, remove the wax against the hair growth, (i.e. in the opposite direction that the hair grows in). This is done by gently smoothing a piece of cotton muslin over the waxed area, pulling the skin taut with one hand and pulling the muslin off with the other. Always remove a little hair off at a time, especially if you have fairly this growth.

Precautions to be taken when Waxing Eyebrow Hair

Eyebrow waxing is not recommended for people suffering from diabetes or those who have varicose veins or poor circulation, as they are more susceptible to infection.

People who use Retin-A, Differin, Renova or Accutane are also advised to refrain from hair waxing on the face as these medications tend to weaken the skin and tearing of the skin may occur when the wax is removed.

Test a small area first but generally waxing can be used on most parts of the body with the exceptions being male genitals, nipples, inside the ears, nose and eyelashes.

After waxing, apply a soothing balm like tea tree oil onto the area afterwards. Also avoid direct sunlight, acid based facial treatments and liquid makeup for several hours.

Benefits of Eyebrow Waxing

·    It relieves the razor rash after shaving.
·    It helps avoid ingrown hair and infection.
·    It helps reduce swelling and itching after shaving.
·    It soothes after any chemical hair removal.
·    It is very safe for sensitive skin.
·    Hair reappears between 3 and 8 weeks later.
·    Lesser hair regrows and it is generally finer.
In order to make waxing hair removal much easier and less frequent, always apply a hair inhibitor after each waxing session.

Hot waxes and Cold waxes

Good hot waxes melt just above body temperature which makes it very easy to spread them thinly over the skin. As the wax hardens it traps the hair in the wax so it is removed by the roots when the wax is ripped off.

Cold waxes are offered in pre-coated strips, which can be pressed directly onto the skin. The hair sticks to the wax and it is then removed with the quick pull back action.
