Importance of Dental and Health Care Insurance

White, even and healthy teeth make a beautiful smile. It creates your first impression on a person you meet. Whether it is for a job interview or a date, your smile can make the difference. How do you achieve a winning smile? One solution is following of basic oral hygiene practices. However, if you want to preserve that smile through thick and thin of life, you need to have an understanding of dental and health care insurance. If you understand benefits of dental and health care insurance, you would pick a plan today to insure your precious smile. The upside is that it will not only help preserve your smile, but will help you save on future treatment costs also.

There is not enough stress you can lay on maintaining oral hygiene. Your mouth is like a gateway to your body. It is a direct path for bacteria to enter your body. Oral hygiene is like a sentry at this gateway. You keep that sentry well equipped with adequate brushing, rinsing and floss and you would have created an effective barrier. These good practices, however, do not arm you against eventualities. Getting your teeth knocked off in a street brawl or a road accident is a very possible scenario. To guard against such eventualities, dental and health care insurance is like a savior.

Dental and Health Care Insurance Types

Since you worry about your future expenses on medication, you do a survey for a good dental and health care insurance. What are your choices? There are many types of dental and health care insurance plans you can choose from depending upon your age and medical condition. These plans generally fall under two categories, indemnity and discount plans. An indemnity plan will cater for routine works like teeth cleaning, x-ray and fluoride treatment whereas discount plan gives you a reduced price option for a number of procedures. You can choose a plan as per your requirements.

If you are employed, you can go for a plan where you pay now and collect later. This means that you pay for all expenses from your pocket, and later claim all expenses from your employer. Your reimbursement will depend upon the type of plan you choose, that is, you might be reimbursed in full or partially.

Another plan provides for using services of dentists covered by an umbrella organization. Preferred Provider Option (PPO) is an insurance plan under which you can visit dentists from a list provided by your employer or insurance company. Your employer or insurer directly covers the bills and you do not have to worry about any paperwork. Under this scheme, you can still opt to choose your favorite dentist, but you may not be reimbursed in full and only a discount might be offered.

If you are not satisfied by this arrangement, you can go for UCR (Usual, Customary and Reasonable) plan that provides for fixed dental rates for any dental treatment you undergo. However, in such plans, it is prudent to work out cost difference between the premium and actual cost of dental treatment. You will lose out dearly if you pay a heavy premium yet the treatment you undertake is cheaper. If such a situation arises, you are better off with an indemnity plan like PPO where you are not taking a loss.

Apart from these, basic dental care plans are available from many insurance companies wherein they will provide you with discount on a slew of services. However, if you are choosing a third party option, insurance companies might subject you to small dental tests to ascertain your present dental health. Your premium will be decided based upon your current dental health.

Maintaining your dental health is an extremely important aspect of your healthy life. Follow simple methods in maintaining your teeth clean and save yourself from bad breath. There is nothing more embarrassing than a mouthful of stained teeth and reeking foul breath. Avoid all these by following regular oral hygiene. Visit your dentist regularly for a thorough check up and cover for those visits by choosing an optimal dental and health care insurance plan.
