Aromatherapy Benefits - Role of Essential Oils     Bookmark and Share

Essential oils which form the base of aromatherapy have a very strong impact on a person’s mood and also affect one physiologically. Oils have a powerful effect on the body because they are absorbed through the skin into the body’s circulation.

Aromatherapy can be used as a natural compliment or alternative to other health treatment options. It is important to know that there are a lot of benefits of aromatherapy, but, it is also important to understand that the traditional medications that you might be taking cannot be simply done away. Aromatherapy doesn’t “cure” major illnesses, but it is effective in alleviating many of the discomforts associated with them.

Essential oils can be used through inhalation, by adding to bath water, by massaging into the skin or by heating in many different ways in order to fragrance the atmosphere. However, essential oils need to be diluted with carrier oils before they can be used as these oils can cause skin irritation if used undiluted. Natural, rather than synthetic oils should be used wherever possible due to the fact that they have a greater therapeutic effect. It is preferable to use 100% pure essential oils as these are not mixed with alcohol and other additives.

When mixing a blend, pick oils whose aromas you like and try experimenting with each using different quantities. Always keep a record of the types of oils and the number of drops you have used so that you can ensure that it is correctly diluted with extra carrier oil. Bear in mind that every five drops of essential oils should be diluted with 10 ml of carrier oil.

The Smell Factor.

To fully understand benefits of aromatherapy, it is imperative to understand how the body processes smells. The sense of smell is pretty powerful. In fact, the body can distinguish around 10,000 different scents!

When the scents are inhaled, the smell travels across the olfactory nerves located inside the nose and then up into the part of the brain that controls our moods, our memories and our ability to learn. This area is called the Limbic System and when stimulated, it releases endorphins, neurotransmitters and other \'feel-good\' chemicals. Oils have a powerful effect when applied on the body because they are absorbed through the skin into the body’s circulation.

Aromatherapy: A Natural Way to Improve Health.

Aromatherapy is a wonderful and natural alternative to other treatment options that are based on synthetic products and chemicals. These can be detrimental to health in the long run and can also become habitual, making the person dependant on them. The use of all prescription drugs is aimed at curing the symptoms and rarely does it remove the cause. An important benefit of aromatherapy is that it takes a holistic approach to the problem.

Aromatherapy Can Easily Be Practiced at Home

Aromatherapy is easy to learn and practice at home. Though a lot of people seek out professional massage therapists or visit expensive spas for their aromatherapy sessions, it is not something that cannot be enjoyed within the confines of your home. There are a lot of aromatherapy products available so you just need to decide on which product suits your requirement and offers you the most benefit. You could choose from candles, bath salts, air fresheners or aromatherapy jewelry.

Essential oils added to a warm bath can be immensely relaxing, sensual, healing or simply refreshing depending on the oil you choose to add to the bath water. You can also experiment by using more than on oil at a time. Your bath should be comfortably hot and add the oil only when the taps are turned off. The bathroom door should be kept closed so that the vapors do not escape and create the right ambience with candles and soothing music.

After your body has been cleansed and soaked, dip a sponge into the oil mix and gently massage the body before rinsing.

The Most Common Benefits of Aromatherapy are:

- Aids in relaxation and stress relief.
- Boosts the immune, respiratory and circulatory system.
- Improves skin tone.

- Reduces inflammation.
- Relieves menstrual cramps.
- Is helpful in decreasing sinus and lung congestion.
- Kills fungal and bacterial infections.
- Energizes the person.

Aromatherapy can be easily integrated into your daily life and is effective in improving your lifestyle by making it healthy and stress free.
