The number of aromatherapy products and option available is staggering and confusing. So many aromas, so many blends and equal number of ways to use them, what to choose can be a daunting task! Even if you are a beginner you can master the art of making and choosing the right aromatherapy recipe, whether it’s for bath salts or massage oil.
Basics for an Aromatherapy Recipe
The first step in trying to choose which aromatherapy recipe to use is to be sure about the kind of aroma that you have in mind. The options are many from floral, fruity to spicy. You can simplify your decision making by visiting a store that has sample bottles of different essential oils on display. Try sniffing each one of them and make note how each smell makes you feel. Try to pick scents that create similar sensations, like lavender and mint, which are both soothing.
Next, try and learn more about the properties of each essential oil. Some oils possess healing properties. Some have properties that relieve stress, while another essential oil may be good for digestive disorders. It is best to check about these oils with a licensed aroma therapist if you plan to follow a therapeutic aromatherapy recipe to ensure that you know how to handle each ingredient safely.
Finally, you need to decide what type of product you want to make. There\'s literally an aromatherapy recipe out there for anything and everything.
Start With Simple Projects
An aromatherapy recipe does not necessarily have to be complex. You can start with something as simple as adding one drop of essential oil, like eucalyptus, to carrier oil like apricot kernel oil, for a revitalizing massage.
Bath salts are another easy way to make an aromatherapy recipe. For a bath salt, combine less than 10 drops of a soothing essential oil like lavender with about two cups of either sea salt or Epsom salts. Add several drops of moisturizing carrier oil like sunflower oil.
You can also make an air freshener or an aromatherapy candle at home. Do remember to write down each aromatherapy recipe and take notes on how you liked each product so that you are sure about what to choose and do the next time you want to try an aromatherapy recipe. After a few trials, you can experiment with the ingredients or the combinations but as a beginner, stick to the direction and the proportions.
Aromatherapy Recipe for Damaged Hair
This recipe can be of great help for hair that has been damaged by weather, perming or bleaching. It can be used once a week. Part the hair into sections and then apply the oil blend with a piece of cotton wool dipped in oil. Once all the partings have been covered, cover the entire length down to the ends of hair with the oil blend. When oil has been applied to the entire hair length, pile the hair on top of the head and wrap it in a towel. Leave the oil on for one or two hours before washing it off.
Shampoo should be applied to the hair and worked in before adding any water. If water is added first, it is difficult to remove all the oil.

- 15 drops Rosewood

- 5 drops Lavender
- 10 mls Jojoba
- 50 mls vegetable oil
