Aromatherapy Certification - Choose Right One     Bookmark and Share

The rising popularity of aromatherapy has sprung up schools, neighbor hood classes and internet sites teaching the subject. Many of these offer aromatherapy certification through correspondence wherein students learn about the subject through written material mailed to them. Some also provide interactive classroom sessions.

The idea behind such certification may be to provide knowledge to curious beginners or serious professionals working in spas or health centers. Many nurses, health care workers (especially those dealing with the elderly or terminally ill patients) also take up these curses so that they can offer their clients healing in a holistic manner.

Aromatherapy does not focus on healing specific ailments at any one time, but, the idea behind this genre of healing is to tackle all the problems and ailments afflicting the patient.

Today, practicing aromatherapy has multiple benefits of improving your lifestyle in a holistic way, of doing your fellow citizens a service and also being an extremely lucrative career option. Whatever be the reason for taking up an aromatherapy certification, there is a very wide choice available so that making the right choice may be very difficult.

Before you decide upon which course to pursue, it\'s essential to understand what is meant by "certification."

There is no standardized certification for aromatherapy in most of the countries. As of now, aromatherapy certification is granted to a person who has completed a course of study that granted him a certificate on completion of the course. Since there\'s no standardized curriculum either, there\'s no way to know what this "certification" means.

Difficulties

The lack of standardization poses a serious problem for professionals. As there are no basic standards or guidelines, communication and exchange with other professionals is also difficult. Also research, which is necessary to build a body of knowledge for aromatherapy is not possible. This also means that practitioners of aromatherapy are not recognized as legitimate complementary health care practitioners.

Health care professionals, such as nurses, physical therapists and beauticians are allowed to practice only if they have a valid license or certificate, however, no such certification exists for aroma therapists, thereby, leaving it open to a lot of malpractice and speculation.

The lack of standardization raises a lot of doubts in the mind of public too. They have no set parameters by which they can evaluate what aroma therapists do. With no standardized curriculum and no core body of knowledge, anybody with a scented candle can claim to be an aroma therapist.

Steps for Improvements

Recently many organizations have been formed with a goal to educate people about aromatherapy and to improve academic standards of the same.

In some countries, these organizations are trying to standardize aromatherapy and aromatherapy education. In US, a recently formed body, ‘The National Association of Holistic Aroma therapists (NAHA)’, is working in this direction. They publish a journal, have established a code of ethics and have approved two levels of aromatherapy education.

The Canadian Federation of Aroma therapists have established standards for aromatherapy certification in Canada. They have also laid down standards for safety and professional conduct and a public directory of certified aroma therapists.

Before choosing any certification, it compares and evaluates several schools that offer aromatherapy certification. Compare their curricula against the standards approved by various bodies. In UK, The International Council of Holistic Therapists formed in the 1980s offers various courses and also provides recognition to courses offered by other institutes in and outside the country.

Choosing Aromatherapy Certification

Basic levels of instruction allow you to use essential oils safely and effectively for relaxation and improving the quality of life. Basic levels of instruction tell you about:

· What is Aromatherapy?
· What are essential oils?
· Effect of essential oils on the body and the mind?
· Safe and effective way of using these oils?

More advanced levels of study teach you about incorporating aromatherapy knowledge into natural health and or allopathic health care practices.

Advanced levels of study also teach about production of oils, oil chemistry, and understanding of the link to memory, mood and emotion, advanced treatment methods and applications, safety information, and additional bio-specificities of various oils and their medicinal and traditional uses.

There are several schools that offer some form of aromatherapy certification. More often, community colleges or smaller educational institutes provide aromatherapy certification. Often, these are scheduled as weekend courses so as to suit the scheduling demands of most of the students.

Finding a school in your area is not difficult and in case you are unable to do so there are a host of choices available for online and correspondence aromatherapy certification.
