“Amrita” is a word from the Hindi lexicon, which literally means “the nectar of immortality”. Today aromatherapy is a household name. It is a healing process, which uses pure, unadulterated botanical oils to affect the physiology and the emotions.

History of Aromatherapy:

The term aromatherapy is relatively new but its roots can be traced back to about 6000 years in the ancient Vedic and Egyptian Civilizations. There is mention of using plant extracts for ointments, cosmetics, healing balms and religious practices in their literature.
Oil was used for ages for their healing and balancing properties, however, with the advent of modern science, this knowledge was relegated in the background till it was accidentally rediscovered.

A French chemist Rene Gattefosse in 1928 burnt his hands while researching botanical essences and applied lavender oil to it. To his surprise the pain was relieved and the healing process was hastened. This prompted the advent of the modern era of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy and its Effects:

The tiny droplets formed in a sac or gland on the surface of a flower, leaf, bark, stem, or root, which provide the plant its unique fragrance or identity are identified as essential oils. Aromatherapy uses this least understood yet the most powerful of the five senses; sense of smell. Upon smelling an aroma, an impulse travels along the olfactory nerve directly to the limbic part of the brain. This part of the brain evokes memory, emotions, hunger response and sexual arousal and though we might not be aware consciously, our subconscious mind has already received it and reacted to it. Effects of essential oils can be uplifting, soothing, stimulating, refreshing, and calming.

So now what is Amrita Aromatherapy and how is it unique?
